Case study

Water pumping systems for ski resorts: snow cannons, pumping station and slopes

Power quality · SPF series

Harmonic filters for ski resorts

Torytrans has worked with one of Spain’s most prestigious ski resorts to improve power quality and optimise the energy efficiency of its installations. On this project, ENERQ carried out the needs assessment for integrating Torytrans harmonic filters, identifying the installation’s requirements and helping to define the most suitable solution.

Installation

The resort has numerous pumping stations for artificial snow production and lift systems that carry skiers across the slopes. These installations use motors controlled by large variable speed drives, which are essential for adapting the equipment to operating needs.

Problem

In operation, variable speed drives generate harmonics that can degrade power quality and affect other equipment connected to the network. They can also cause unwanted reactive power consumption, with a knock-on effect on energy efficiency and the installation’s operating costs.

Solution

Based on ENERQ’s needs assessment, Torytrans SPF series harmonic filters were integrated. They are designed to reduce harmonic distortion and improve power quality. These filters help protect the installation’s equipment from the effects of harmonics, improve the power factor and reduce reactive energy demand from the grid, for more efficient and reliable operation. In recent years a filtering system has been commissioned at an artificial snow pumping station equipped with two 450 kW motors and one 500 kW motor, a total installed power of 1,400 kW.

Result

Harmonic filtering helps improve the quality of the power supply, increase equipment reliability and optimise the resort’s energy efficiency. Fewer problems from harmonic distortion and a better power factor can help prevent breakdowns, minimise unplanned stoppages and keep electricity costs under control. Power quality and energy efficiency are increasingly important for ensuring the operational continuity and sustainability of ski resorts.
